Departure by coach for a guided tour of Seville. We will begin the visit with the Plaza de España, adorned with azulejos and built especially for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The square forms a semicircle 200 metres in diameter, symbolizing Spain welcoming its former colonies. It faces the Guadalquivir River, representing the route to the Atlantic Ocean and America. A unique building lines its entire curved side. At the centre of the square stands a fountain (designed by Vicente Traver, a Valencian architect). Between the centre and the palace run semi-circular canals, crossed by four bridges representing the four ancient kingdoms of Spain. You will then continue the tour through the charming Santa Cruz district, where it is pleasant to stroll past flower-filled patios typical of Seville. Formerly the Jewish quarter, located within the old city walls, it is part of the historic heart of the city and lies next to the most famous monuments of the Andalusian capital. A place of art and history, the district dates back to the Middle Ages and is full of legends, churches and palaces testifying to its past. Enhanced at the beginning of the 20th century, it is now one of Seville’s most emblematic districts, renowned for the charm of its narrow streets and shaded squares. Then discover the Alcazar(1) of Seville, one of the most remarkable palaces in Spain and a masterpiece of Mudéjar architecture. Built from the 10th century and later expanded by Christian rulers after the Reconquest, it elegantly combines Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque influences. Its richly decorated patios, azulejo-covered rooms and lush gardens make it an iconic site of Seville. Still used by the Spanish royal family for official stays, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
