Frankfurt, a cosmopolitan and vibrant city

Home town of the writer, poet and playwright Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Frankfurt is famous worldwide for its vibrant cultural life, its business quarter, international fairs like the International Motor Show Germany and the Frankfurt Book fair – a major event that has been held for more than 500 years - and its excellent geographical location.

Situated on the Main River, a tributary of the Rhine, this amazing and fascinating city is rich in contrasts: breathtakingly beautiful old buildings which bear the scars of Second World War bombings stand next to modern skyscrapers. The most important monument in the city is Frankfurt Cathedral, cited as a prime example of Gothic architecture; the Commerzbank Tower is often referred to as one of the major modern architectural designs. Another must-see site is St. Paul's Church. This piece of priceless cultural heritage also bears witness to historic events, having been the venue for the 1848 Frankfurt parliament session, the very first freely elected political assembly in German history.

Coblenz, Mainz and Heidelberg: must-see stop-overs
